Known for their star-gazing haze of down-tempo electronic melancholy, Aquilo showed an interesting change of pace last month with the unusually upbeat Good Girl. A song that saw the Lake-District duo dust off the pieces of their broken hearts and head out on the town for a bit of something new.
Returning now to somewhat familiar territory with new track Never Seen You Get So Low, Tom Higham and Ben Fletcher appear to offer all the slow-burning electronic flourishes expected of their self-produced Prozac pop, but set in a more groove led tone. With twinkling synths, shimmering percussion and glorious harmonies that further enrich their impressive songwriting skills, Aquilo wrap listeners up in a warm blanket of reassurance after a hard day and produce a much clearer picture of what to expect from their as yet unannounced debut.
One thing is for sure, it’s hard to imagine that two guys who used to thrash out to grunge and heavy metal, could ever be this smooth.
Aquilo have been working with SOHN and Olafur Arnalds on their debut LP, which will be released next year on Island Records.
