Tegan and Sara – Boyfriend

“I don’t wanna be your secret anymore.”

It’s been a fairly long breadth of time since I’ve listened to any music by Canadian twins Tegan and Sara. Right now I am recalling my obsessive One Tree Hill watching days; back when I would meticulously scour for every artist that featured on that show. I’m sure it wouldn’t at all surprise anyone to say that my favourite character was indeed Peyton. I related to her rocky disposition and emotional dependence on music that meant something to her – if it wasn’t for her enviously curly locks and thin frame, well, we could have been the same person.

Tegan and Sara, who first formatted a familiarity with me through intimately heart-rending tracks such as Don’t Confess and Where Did The Good Go have, in recent years, swerved into a more current synth-pop direction. Boyfriend is the first track taken from their recently released eighth studio album ‘Love You To Death’ and just like my last song post, comes with a (more obvious) genre twist. Razor sharp and insanely catchy, Boyfriend is bubblegum pop perfection that nods at Robyn’s influence with Katy Perry’s glossy kiss of approval.

As explained by Sara Quin “It’s a pretty straight-forward pop song about a relationship that I was getting into with a girl who had never dated a girl before. We’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and want to make it official and they’re not ready.”

With their honestly infectious lyrics – “You call me up like you would your best friend/ You turn me on, like you would your boyfriend,” the twins continue to manifest their identity into new songs in new ways that still fit within the current pop landscape but – “I don’t wanna be your secret anymore.”  – keep them victoriously outside the closet.

Tegan and Sara’s new album ‘Love You To Death’ is out now and the synthy sisters are currently on an extensive global tour that will hit London’s Koko on June 22nd. Grab tickets here.
