If you are having a hard time swallowing any holiday cheer this Christmastime, (though I’m sure that festive bubbly has been going down an absolute treat. Am I right?) Boy, do I feel you. No amount of twinkly lights or turkey can fill that gaping Yuletide hole, brought forth by an inescapable pandemic and the Government’s ever-changing carousel of chaos. I am not usually one to play the role of seasonal Scrooge, but for those of us restricted from seeing our families this Christmas day, there really is no denying that this year hits incredibly different.
Thankfully, there are plenty of songs to keep us company. If you are sick of sleigh-bells ringing and the usual 10 overplayed songs on loop and would prefer something a little more sombre and sentimental – I’ve got you.
With little to no artists touring in 2020, we have definitely seen an influx of artists making original Christmas recordings, with features from the likes of Blossoms, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, Lyra, girlinred, The Staves, CMAT and Junior Brother. I have also thrown in a few personal favourites from Relient K, Devon Baldwin, Rhys Lewis and Aquilo. Or if you’d prefer to skate away with Gabrielle Aplin and Hannah Grace or recall a festive favourite with Jack Garratt, there are a few well known covers in there too.
The playlist does end on a happy high note, with The Lutra’s ‘Give It Up For Christmas’, all proceeds of which will be going to The Shelter and Music Venue Trust – so make sure to send over a donation.
Whether you are celebrating with friends, family or flatmates, remember to check in on those you love. There are a sleigh-ful of reasons to feel grateful for all we have this season, but it’s ok to still feel sad too.
Here’s hoping 2021 treats us with a bit more kindness.
Merry Christmas 🙂
