“I Don’t Wanna Run Away, But We Gotta Leave Those Days Behind.”
Watching Ten Fé close out my final night of The Great Escape Festival, back in May, marked the beginning of what would be a season’s love affair with glorious sunshine, incredible live music and some amazing humans. It seems only fitting then, that as the heatwave and sunshine dissipates into the darkening clouds of an impending autumn, that the band would release a track about the bitter end to a long Summer romance.
Leading on vocal, Ben Moorhouse narrates Not Tonight in a bittersweet baritone, as expansive arpeggiated synths swirl through highway-ready drums that recall the rugged on-the-road Americana Rock of Bruce Springsteen. Tinged with vulnerable darkness and the band’s signature vintage swagger, a brooding tension builds against the song’s sun-kissed backdrop. From here, honey-hued melodies evoke a sentimental sway as we ready ourselves to leave the memories in the rear-view.
As the rain continues to beat down on the final days of August, it might soon be time to leave the Summer behind. But maybe not just yet. Not tonight.
